Setting up a new PC traditionally takes hours of manual work. With Windows Autopilot, a user can unbox a new device, sign in, and have it configure itself.
How it works
1. The device’s hardware ID is registered with your Microsoft tenant, often by the reseller at purchase
2. The user powers it on and connects to the internet
3. They sign in with their work account
4. Intune applies your settings, installs apps, and enforces security policies
5. The device is ready to use
Benefits
– No imaging: devices ship directly from the supplier to the user
– Consistent configuration: every PC follows the same standard
– Faster onboarding, especially for remote staff
– Less IT effort, with no hands-on setup
– Easy repurposing: reset a device and hand it to a new user
Deployment modes
– User-driven: the employee signs in and completes setup
– Self-deploying: for shared devices and kiosks
– Pre-provisioning: IT or the reseller prepares most of the setup in advance
Requirements
– Windows 10 or 11 Pro or higher
– Microsoft Entra ID and Intune licensing (included in Business Premium)
– Device registration in Autopilot
– An internet connection
Tips
– Keep applications and policies simple at first
– Test the full experience on a pilot device
– Document the process for staff
– Pair with BitLocker and compliance policies
