CHICAGO — Epic Games is no longer just experimenting with artificial intelligence; they are rewriting the rulebook of game development. In a series of recent disclosures, the company confirmed a dramatic pivot toward “maximum AI acceleration”.
“Yes, we are vibe-coding things,” Marcus Wassmer, Epic’s Executive VP of Development, stated bluntly. “That means our engineers are no longer writing the bulk of the code, but they are still guiding the tools to get the architectural result we want.”
The Death of Handwritten Code?
According to internal reports, the directive from top leadership is clear: a transition to full AI workflows for art generation and an aggressive push to eliminate standard handwritten code where possible. Epic is primarily utilizing cutting-edge LLMs and code agents—specifically Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex—to act as production-level engineers.
Rebuilding the Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite
The fruits of this AI-first approach are already hitting live services. Epic recently shipped an AI-assisted update to the Epic Games Launcher, noting that they “vibe coded” the storefront to optimize its performance, making it significantly faster and lighter than its competitors.
Meanwhile, the live-service juggernaut Fortnite serves as the primary testing ground for these automated pipelines. Stephanie Arnette, senior external development manager on Fortnite, confirmed that the studio is deploying AI tooling across the game’s art department to streamline asset pipelines and accelerate content delivery. Epic emphasizes that these tools are built to eliminate tedious, repetitive tasks rather than replace human vision, though the pivot follows a turbulent period of layoffs and internal restructuring for the company.
The AI infrastructure is also being heavily leveraged to solve historic technical debt within Fortnite’s ecosystems. Epic reported that AI code tools successfully eradicated a class of non-deterministic asset cooking bugs that had plagued their engineering team for nearly a decade.
Unreal Engine 6: Built By AI, For AI
The true destination for this technology is Unreal Engine 6 (UE6). Wassmer clarified that nearly all active AI development is happening directly within the development streams attached to Fortnite, the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), and UE6.
Unveiled officially at Epic’s State of Unreal in Chicago, UE6 treats AI not as a third-party plugin, but as a foundational architectural pillar alongside its new Verse programming language. The engine will natively integrate models like Claude and Google Gemini directly into the editor as “creativity and productivity multipliers.”
Epic is using AI to build UE6 to ensure the next-generation engine can automatically handle:
- Massive Scalability: Automatically optimizing high-fidelity assets to scale seamlessly down to mobile devices or low-end PCs without requiring months of manual optimization from developers.
- Automated Bug Resolution: Running continuous, automated root-cause analysis on stability issues and generating automatic fixes for hardware and driver compatibility.
- Accelerated Timelines: Shifting the burden of tech debt to automated agents so core engine developers can ship features on hyper-accelerated timelines.
High Stakes and Industry Skepticism
Epic’s aggressive timeline has not come without friction. The company recently delayed a highly anticipated upcoming shooter collaboration featuring Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars intellectual properties. Originally slated for an early 2027 release, the game was pushed back specifically to retool its production pipeline into an AI-first workflow.
The industry is watching closely. A recent survey revealed that more than half of game developers view generative AI as a negative force regarding job security and artistic integrity. Yet, Epic remains undeterred. When asked about the brewing backlash from AI skeptics, Wassmer made Epic’s stance clear: “We are more concerned about the risks of moving too slowly than we are about AI skepticism.”
With early access for Unreal Engine 6 targeted for late 2027, Epic’s “vibe coding” experiment will serve as the ultimate test for the future of interactive entertainment. If successful, it could trigger an irreversible, AI-driven revolution across the entire gaming industry.
