Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be) is the newest mainstream wireless standard. Business access points, newer laptops, and many phones now support it. The real question is whether your office benefits yet.

What Wi-Fi 7 adds

– Wider channels: up to 320 MHz in the 6 GHz band, for higher peak speeds

– Multi-Link Operation (MLO): a device can use several bands at once, improving reliability and latency

– Better handling of congestion in busy environments

– Higher-order modulation for more throughput at good signal strength

Where the market stands

Access point vendors have broad Wi-Fi 7 portfolios, and many new flagship phones and premium laptops include support. Mid-range and older devices, printers, scanners, and many IoT devices still use Wi-Fi 5 or 6, and will keep doing so for years. Specific adoption percentages vary by source, so check current data from your vendors.

Do you need it now?

Yes, probably, if:

– You’re replacing access points anyway. Buying Wi-Fi 7 gives a longer useful life.

– You have dense areas such as meeting rooms, open offices, or events

– You rely on latency-sensitive apps like video calls and real-time collaboration

– You plan to keep the new equipment for 5 to 7 years

Probably not urgently, if:

– Your current Wi-Fi 6 network is healthy and well designed

– Most of your devices don’t support Wi-Fi 7

– Budgets are tight

What else to upgrade

– Switches: Wi-Fi 7 access points often need 2.5 Gbps or faster uplinks, and sufficient PoE power

– Cabling: Cat6 or better

– Internet connection: Wi-Fi speed can’t exceed your uplink

– Clients: the benefit depends on the devices connecting

Design still matters more than the label

A well-planned Wi-Fi 6 network beats a poorly planned Wi-Fi 7 one. A site survey is still the best investment.

Tip

Check regulatory availability of 6 GHz channels and any limits on power or outdoor use in Canada before planning large deployments.
