What a UPS does
– Provides battery power during outages so equipment shuts down safely
– Filters surges and voltage fluctuations
– Keeps critical systems running through short interruptions
Types
– Standby (offline): basic protection for desktops and small devices
– Line-interactive: regulates voltage, ideal for small offices and network equipment
– Online (double-conversion): continuously supplies clean power, best for servers and critical gear
Sizing
Add up the wattage of equipment you plan to connect, then choose a UPS rated comfortably above it (aim for around 70โ80% load). Decide how many minutes of runtime you need, usually enough for a clean shutdown.
Best practices
– Connect servers, switches, firewalls, and NAS devices
– Don’t plug laser printers into a UPS, since their power draw is high
– Configure automatic shutdown software so servers power off gracefully
– Replace batteries every 3โ5 years
– Test regularly
Beyond the UPS
For longer outages, consider a generator and whether your internet connection also stays up.
