AI dominates headlines, but how much is it changing day-to-day business? Official Canadian data gives a grounded picture.

Adoption in Canada

Statistics Canada’s Canadian Survey on Business Conditions, conducted in April and May 2026, found that 19.2% of businesses used AI to produce goods or deliver services over the previous 12 months. Coverage of the survey notes that this is nearly triple the share reported in the second quarter of 2024. Still, roughly four in ten businesses say AI isn’t relevant to their operations, according to coverage of the data.

What businesses use it for

Among businesses that use AI, the most common applications were:

– Data analytics (about 37%)

– Text analytics (about 35%)

– Virtual agents or chatbots (about 28%)

– Natural language processing (about 27%)

– Large language models (about 25%)

What this tells us

– Adoption is real but not universal. Most Canadian businesses have not yet adopted AI in their operations.

– Useful AI is often unglamorous: analyzing data and processing text, not futuristic robots.

– Individuals often adopt before organizations do. Staff may be using AI tools informally, which creates risk without governance.

– Return on investment varies. Businesses that do well tend to start with a specific problem, clean data, and trained staff.

Practical lessons for a small business

1. Start with a problem, such as summarizing meetings, drafting proposals, or answering common customer questions

2. Pilot with a small group and measure time saved

3. Set rules for what data can be entered

4. Train people, because tools alone don’t deliver results

5. Watch costs, since usage-based pricing can grow quickly

Be skeptical of both extremes

AI is neither a magic solution nor a passing fad. Treat it like any other business tool: choose it for a purpose and measure results.
