You’ve seen the marketing: “AI PCs” and “Copilot+ PCs.” What do they actually offer?

What is an NPU?

A neural processing unit is a chip designed to run AI tasks efficiently using little power. Copilot+ PCs require an NPU capable of at least 40 TOPS (trillions of operations per second), along with minimum memory and storage requirements.

What it enables

– Background blur, eye contact, and noise suppression in video calls with minimal battery impact

– Live captions and translation

– Local search and recall-style features in Windows

– Faster, more private on-device AI processing, with no cloud round trip

What it doesn’t do (yet)

Most business productivity still runs fine on traditional PCs. Cloud-based Microsoft 365 Copilot doesn’t require a Copilot+ PC. The NPU benefits depend on software that takes advantage of it, and that ecosystem is still growing.

Should you buy now?

– Yes, if you are refreshing hardware anyway. Buying an NPU-equipped machine adds future-proofing at little extra cost.

– Not necessarily, if your current PCs are healthy. Replacing them early just for NPUs is hard to justify.

Consider privacy and governance

Features that capture on-screen activity need policy review before deployment. Make sure IT controls which features are enabled.

Bottom line

NPUs are a sensible bonus on new purchases, not a reason to replace working hardware.
