# Windows 10 Is Past End of Support: A Hardware Refresh Checklist

Microsoft ended standard support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. Devices still
running it no longer receive regular security updates, which increases risk over
time. (Microsoft has offered limited Extended Security Updates; check Microsoft’s
current terms for eligibility and dates.)

**Step 1: Inventory**

List every PC, its operating system version, age, and owner. Your management tools(
Intune, RMM) can generate this automatically.

**Step 2: Check Windows 11 compatibility**

Windows 11 requires:

– A supported 64-bit processor (generally 8th-generation Intel or Ryzen 2000-series
and newer)

– 4 GB RAM minimum (8 GB or more recommended in practice)

– 64 GB storage

– UEFI with Secure Boot

– **TPM 2.0**

Microsoft’s PC Health Check and Intune reports show which devices pass.

**Step 3: Sort your fleet**

– **Compatible:** schedule upgrades

– **Almost compatible** (e.g., TPM disabled in BIOS): may be fixable

– **Not compatible:** plan replacement

**Step 4: Prioritize**

Replace first: devices handling sensitive data, internet-facing users, and the oldest
machines.

**Step 5: Test applications**

Verify line-of-business software, printers, and drivers on Windows 11 before rolling
out widely.

**Step 6: Plan the rollout**

Use phased waves, communicate with staff, back up data, and use Autopilot for fresh
deployments.

**Step 7: Budget**

Spread purchases across quarters if needed, and consider leasing or Hardware-as-
a-Service.

**Isolate what you can’t upgrade**

Any remaining Windows 10 devices should be segmented, locked down, and scheduled
for retirement.
