**What a scan does**

Automated software probes systems, applications, and networks to find:

– Missing security patches

– Outdated software versions

– Insecure configurations

– Open ports and unnecessary services

– Weak or default credentials in some cases

– Expired or weak encryption certificates

**Types of scans**

– **External scans:** check what attackers on the internet can see, such as firewalls,
VPNs, and websites

– **Internal scans:** check devices and servers inside your network

– **Authenticated scans:** log in to systems for deeper, more accurate results

– **Web application scans:** look for flaws in websites and apps

– **Cloud configuration scans:** check settings in Microsoft 365, Azure, and others

**How often?**

– **Continuous or weekly** for internet-facing systems

– **At least monthly** for internal systems

– **After major changes,** such as new servers, firewall changes, or software deployments

– **When critical vulnerabilities are announced** that affect your technology

Many cyber insurers and frameworks require at least quarterly external scans.

**Making results useful**

1. **Prioritize by risk,** not just severity scores. Internet-facing systems and
actively exploited flaws come first.

2. **Assign owners** and deadlines

3. **Patch or mitigate**

4. **Rescan** to confirm fixes

5. **Track trends** over time

**Common pitfalls**

– Scanning without acting

– Reports so long nobody reads them

– Ignoring unmanaged devices

– False confidence: a clean scan doesn’t mean you are secure

**Combine with other controls**

Scanning complements patch management, endpoint protection, and periodic penetration
testing.

**DBR Soft offers regular vulnerability scanning with plain-language reports and
remediation support.** **[Contact us for more information.](https://dbr-soft.com/contact/)**
