The Internet of Things (IoT) means everyday devices connected to your network: cameras,
thermostats, badge readers, printers, smart TVs, sensors, and more.

**Benefits**

– **Efficiency:** automated lighting, heating, and cooling

– **Visibility:** occupancy and equipment monitoring

– **Safety and security:** smart cameras, door sensors, and environmental alarms

– **Productivity:** smart meeting rooms and asset tracking

– **Data** for planning and maintenance

**Risks**

– **Weak security:** default passwords, unpatched firmware, and no updates at all

– **Hidden devices:** items connected without IT knowing

– **Network exposure:** a compromised camera can be a foothold into your network

– **Privacy:** cameras and sensors collect information about people, which brings
obligations under Quebec’s Law 25 and other laws

– **Short support lifespans:** vendors may stop updating a device while it’s still
in use

– **Botnets:** compromised devices can be used in attacks on others

**Controls that work**

1. **Inventory every connected device**

2. **Isolate IoT on its own network (VLAN)** with strict firewall rules, so it can’t
reach servers and workstations

3. **Change default credentials** and use unique passwords

4. **Choose vendors with security commitments:** regular firmware updates, vulnerability
reporting, and a clear support period

5. **Patch and monitor** firmware

6. **Disable unused features,** such as remote access and cloud connections you
don’t need

7. **Limit data collection** and set retention periods

8. **Plan replacement** when support ends

**Before you buy**

Ask the supplier: How are updates delivered? How long are they supported? How do
I secure remote access? Where is data stored?

**Treat IoT like any other computer**

If it’s on your network, it needs ownership, updates, and monitoring.

**DBR Soft can segment your network and secure connected devices.** **[Contact us for more information.](https://dbr-soft.com/contact/)**
