Planning your 2027 IT budget? Here’s what we recommend watching and doing, based
on the trends covered in this series. Forecasts can change, so treat this as a planning
aid.

**1. Hardware: buy early and buy smart**

– **Expect continued price pressure.** AI-driven demand has tightened memory and
storage supply, and several analysts expect tight conditions into 2027, with some
easing for flash storage possible later in the year.

– **Refresh on schedule,** especially devices that can’t run Windows 11 or are out
of warranty

– **Standardize** on a few models and get written quotes with price-hold dates

– **Consider leasing or HaaS** to spread cost

– **Specify 16 GB RAM as the baseline** and avoid overbuying

– **Ask about country of origin** given shifting tariffs

**2. Software and subscriptions: manage renewals actively**

– Microsoft 365 prices rose in July 2026, and renewals will bring the increase

– Audit licenses, right-size seats, and consolidate overlapping tools

– Pilot Copilot or other AI tools with measurable goals before broad purchase

– Track renewal dates and negotiate multi-year terms where it makes sense

**3. Security: strengthen identity and recovery**

– **MFA everywhere, passkeys for admins,** and Conditional Access

– **EDR with 24/7 monitoring** (MDR) for smaller teams

– **Immutable, tested backups,** including Microsoft 365 data

– **Email security and payment-verification procedures** to counter business email
compromise and deepfake fraud

– **Vendor risk reviews:** supply chain attacks are a major entry route

– **Security awareness training and phishing simulations**

**4. Cloud and connectivity: build resilience**

– Document cloud dependencies and plan for outages

– Add a backup internet link at critical sites (cellular or satellite)

– Consider data residency and sovereignty requirements for sensitive workloads

– Review cloud costs monthly

**5. AI: govern before you scale**

– Publish an AI use policy and approve specific tools

– Start with a few low-risk, high-value use cases

– Watch Canadian privacy and AI rules as they develop

**6. Compliance: stay ahead**

– **Quebec Law 25:** keep your incident register, privacy impact assessments, and
policies current

– **Customer and supplier requirements:** expect flow-down terms from clients subject
to Bill C-8, and from defence contracts using the CPCSC

– **Cyber insurance:** meet control requirements and answer questionnaires accurately

**7. People and process**

– Fill skills gaps with managed or co-managed services

– Document processes and standardize onboarding and offboarding

– Build a 12 to 36 month IT roadmap and review it quarterly

**A simple budgeting rule**

Plan for hardware and software cost increases in 2027, keep a contingency of 5%
to 10%, and prioritize security and recovery spending before new tools.

**What could change this outlook**

Trade policy, memory supply, regulation, and a major cyber event. Revisit this plan
every quarter.
