Power over Ethernet (PoE) sends electricity and data over a single network cable,
so devices like cameras, phones, and access points don’t need their own power outlet.

**Why use PoE?**

– Fewer cables and outlets

– Easier installation in ceilings and remote locations

– Central power backup (one UPS protects all connected devices)

– Remote reboot of devices from the switch

**PoE standards**

– **802.3af (PoE):** up to about 15 W per port. Phones and basic cameras.

– **802.3at (PoE+):** up to about 30 W. Most access points and PTZ cameras.

– **802.3bt (PoE++):** up to about 60 W or 90 W. High-power devices, displays, and
some Wi-Fi 7 access points.

**Plan your power budget**

Switches have a total PoE budget, not just per-port limits. Add up the needs of
all devices, then add headroom.

**Cable considerations**

Use quality Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a cabling. Avoid cheap copper-clad aluminum cable,
which can overheat and perform poorly. Standard Ethernet cable runs are limited
to 100 meters.

**Alternatives**

If your switch lacks PoE, use PoE injectors, but PoE switches are neater and easier
to manage.

**Tips**

– Match device power class to the switch

– Label ports and cables

– Monitor power usage in managed switches
