# Extended Warranties: When They Pay Off and When They Don’t

Extended warranties are sold at nearly every purchase. Sometimes they’re smart; 
sometimes they’re wasted money.

**When they usually pay off**

– **Servers and critical infrastructure,** where failure stops the business and 
rapid on-site service matters

– **Expensive equipment,** where repair costs approach replacement cost

– **Mobile devices and laptops** used in rough conditions, if accidental damage 
is included

– **Hardware you plan to keep beyond the standard warranty** (for example, a server
used for six or seven years)

– **Environments without spare equipment or technical staff**

**When they often don’t**

– **Inexpensive devices,** where replacement costs less than the coverage

– **Large fleets of identical devices,** where self-insuring with a few spares may
be cheaper

– **Equipment you’ll replace before the warranty ends**

– **Policies with heavy exclusions** or slow service

**Ask these questions**

1. What is the probability and cost of failure?

2. What does downtime cost per day?

3. Is the warranty on-site, and how fast is the response?

4. Does it cover what typically fails (batteries, drives, screens)?

5. Can I keep spares instead?

**A simple approach**

Buy strong coverage for critical systems. For general laptops, consider standard
three-year coverage and a small pool of spares.

**Review regularly**

Warranties expire. Track end dates, and decide whether to renew, replace, or retire
the device.
