Digital transformation sounds big, but for small and mid-sized businesses it means
using technology to work better: faster processes, better customer experience, and
sound decisions.

**What the data says about conditions**

Statistics Canada’s second-quarter 2026 business survey shows that businesses are
juggling inflation, rising input costs, and difficulty recruiting skilled employees,
while about two-thirds are optimistic about the next twelve months. About 19% reported
using AI in producing goods or delivering services. In that environment, technology
investments need to show a clear return.

**Lessons that hold up**

**1. Start with the business problem**. “We need AI” or “We need the cloud” isn’t
a goal. “We lose two days a month on invoicing” is.

**2. Fix the process before automating it**. Automating a broken process just makes
mistakes faster.

**3. Get leadership sponsorship**, with a named owner.

**4. Start small and prove value** A pilot with a measurable result builds support.

**5. Bring people along** Training and communication matter as much as the software.
Most failures are about adoption.

**6. Clean your data** Reports, automation, and AI all depend on it.

**7. Build security in from the start** including MFA, backups, and privacy review(
Law 25).

**8. Choose boring, proven tools** over exotic ones.

**9. Plan for support**. Who maintains it afterward?

**10. Measure and keep improving**. Track time saved, errors reduced, revenue gained,
and customer satisfaction.

**Common pitfalls**

– Buying tools without a plan

– Ignoring change management

– Underestimating integration effort

– Doing too much at once

– Treating it as a one-time project rather than an ongoing practice

**Funding and help**

Check federal and regional programs that support technology adoption, but don’t
let funding drive poor choices.
