# Data Destruction: Wiping vs. Shredding Drives

When a drive reaches the end of its life, you have two main options for protecting
the data on it.

**Software wiping (data erasure)**

Overwrites data so it can’t be recovered, using recognized standards. Many tools
also generate a verification report.

– **Pros:** the drive can be reused or resold; produces an audit record

– **Cons:** slower, and it relies on the drive functioning properly. Failed or damaged
drives may not erase fully.

**Cryptographic erase**

For self-encrypting drives and encrypted SSDs, destroying the encryption key renders
the data unreadable almost instantly. It works best when the drive was encrypted
from the start, one more reason to enable BitLocker everywhere.

**Degaussing**

Uses a strong magnetic field to destroy data on traditional hard drives. It does
not work on SSDs.

**Physical destruction (shredding or crushing)**

The drive is mechanically destroyed into small pieces.

– **Pros:** the most certain method, especially for failed drives and highly sensitive
data

– **Cons:** no reuse or resale; requires a trusted service or equipment

**Why SSDs are tricky**

Flash storage spreads data in ways that make simple overwriting unreliable. Use 
manufacturer secure-erase commands, cryptographic erase, or physical destruction.

**Choosing**

| **Situation** | **Recommended method** | 
| Working drives, reuse planned | Verified software wipe  | 
| Encrypted SSDs  | Cryptographic erase plus verification | 
| Failed drives | Physical destruction | 
| Highly sensitive or regulated data | Physical destruction with certificate |
