# Cybersecurity Assessments and Penetration Testing Explained

These terms get mixed up. Each serves a different purpose.

**Security risk assessment**

A broad review of your security controls, policies, and practices compared to a 
recognized framework or best practices. It answers: “How well protected are we, 
and where are the biggest gaps?”

– **Output:** report with findings and a prioritized plan

– **Best for:** most small and mid-sized businesses as a first step

**Vulnerability scanning**

Automated tools scan systems for known weaknesses, such as missing patches and misconfigurations.

– **Output:** list of vulnerabilities with severity ratings

– **Best for:** regular, ongoing checks

– **Limit:** doesn’t prove a weakness can be exploited

**Penetration testing**

Skilled testers attempt to break in, using the same techniques as attackers, under
agreed rules.

– **Types:** external (from the internet), internal (from inside the network), web
application, wireless, and social engineering

– **Output:** report showing what was exploited, how, and how to fix it

– **Best for:** organizations with mature basics that want to validate their defenses,
or when required by customers, insurers, or regulations

**Red team exercises**

Longer, more realistic simulations that test detection and response too. Typically
for larger organizations.

**Which do you need?**

| Basics in place, need proof | Penetration test | 
| Contract or insurer requires it | Penetration test with formal report |

**Choosing a tester**

Look for recognized certifications, clear scope and rules of engagement, written
authorization, references, and sample reports.

**Prepare properly**

Define scope, schedule, emergency contacts, and backups before testing.

**Act on results**

A report that isn’t fixed is wasted money. Plan remediation and retest.
