# Access Control and Badge Systems: Integrating with IT

Physical security and IT security are linked. Access control systems manage who 
enters your building and when.

**How systems work**

Users present a credential (card, fob, mobile phone, or PIN) at a reader. A controller
verifies permissions and unlocks the door, logging every event.

**Credential types**

– **Proximity cards and fobs:** common, but older formats are easy to clone

– **Smart cards:** more secure encryption

– **Mobile credentials:** use phones with Bluetooth or NFC

– **Biometrics:** fingerprint or face, for higher-security areas

**Why integrate with IT**

– **Identity-based access:** connect to your directory (Entra ID/Active Directory),
so access updates automatically when staff join, change roles, or leave

– **Fast offboarding:** disabling a user’s account also removes door access

– **Audit trails:** logs support investigations and compliance

– **Visitor management:** temporary badges and records

**Cloud vs. on-premises**

Cloud-managed systems simplify remote administration and updates. On-premises systems
give local control but need maintenance.

**Security basics**

– Keep controllers and readers on a protected network

– Use encrypted readers and modern credentials
